Are you a parent of a college student? If so, you’re in the right place! Your support plays a big part in helping your student enjoy their college experience! In today’s post, I will be sharing three tips to help you trust, stay in touch with, and encourage your college student along the way.
One of the best things that you can do for your student is to show them that you trust them. I know that college is a big, new step for them and you want to help them make the right decisions, but I think there are things that your student needs to learn on her own during this time. Let them experience this new thing. Let them make their own decisions. Don’t hesitate to help them through big decisions if they ask for your help though! Offer your advice if your student seems to be struggling and be there to guide them throughout these stressful four years. Remember, you also have to let them learn from their own mistakes though. This will help them grow into responsible young adults.
Stay in touch while also giving them space
College is a whole new experience for your student. Give them space to experience this new thing! Feel free to check up on them, but try not to overwhelm them with daily calls or texts. Instead, let them call you! If this doesn’t seem to work, see if they are interested in setting up a weekly call day for you two to catch up. It is important to also be okay with your student not coming home every weekend. Personally, during my freshman year, weekends were the times when everyone got together to hang out and make memories. Encouraging your student to come home every other weekend is a good compromise! This will let you see them often enough while also helping them not miss out on making those college friendships.
One of the best things that you can do for your college student is to encourage them. This could be done by encouraging them to do well in their classes, to go out and make friends, and to have fun and make the most of the time that they have in college. Making memories is one of the best parts of college! It is also important for your student to know that you will be proud of them if they work hard and do their best in their college classes. Encourage your student to reach their goals! Sometimes, even a little package from home can mean the world to your student during a stressful week!
I hope this post helps those of you who are parents of college students! This time is an important part of your student’s life! Remember, trust your student, stay in touch with them, and encourage them! Your support plays a big part in helping your student make the most of their college experience!
