Sometimes we college students feel like we are too busy to give the people who love us most a little bit of our time. While I understand being busy, I think that we can all spend at least ten minutes letting our parents know that we are still alive. They’ve put up with us for years now, so I think we should all make the time to show them that we still care. In this post, I will be sharing five little ways college students can show their parents they care.
This is the most basic thing you can and should do. Once a week, I want to encourage you to take the time to call your parents. Give them a call to update them on your life this week. Let them know what’s been happening, what big tests you have coming up, and what your roommate did to get on your nerves this week. They like to be a part of your life! If you’re struggling to find a time to call when neither of you is busy, I want you to try setting a regular, weekly phone call. Pick one day a week (and even a specific time if you can) to call your parents and chat! Don’t rush the call, and don’t just call asking for money. That hurts them. They took the time for you when you were growing up, so I think they deserve at least ten minutes of your time a week!
Another thing you can do to show your parents you care is to visit them. Personally, going home every other weekend works great for me. This helps me to get things done and socialize on the weekends I stay at school and spend time with my family on the weekends I am home. When you do visit home, I want you to make sure that you are actually spending time with your family. Give them attention and listen to them. Don’t just stay in your room and watch tv.
Do small things for them
You can also show your parents you care by doing small things for them. These can either be around the house on weekends you’re home or things you can do from your dorm room. Sometimes just an encouraging text will do. You could also try buying your parents a little something that you know they’ve been wanting. No matter what it is, I know your parents will appreciate the gesture.
Offer them your help
Another way you can show your parents you care is by offering them your help on weekends you are home. Little things that make your parents lives easier would be so appreciated! If they seem extra busy one weekend, suggest a few ways you can help them get things done. Instead of leaving things a mess, clean the house a little when you’re home. Try doing your own laundry next time you come home instead of leaving it for your mom to do. Make sure your room is clean when you leave. These little things can be a big help!
Do something that you both enjoy together
Another great way to show your parents you care is by doing something that you both enjoy together. This gives you guys great bonding time and could even get you out of the house. Plus, doing something you love with someone you love makes it that much more fun! If you and your mom both like to go on walks, see if she would like to go with you one morning. If your dad is into gardening, help him get things planted! No matter what you end up doing, if you are doing it together, I know it will make your parents happy.
I hope that this post gave you a few ideas of things you can do to show your parents you care. Remember, it doesn’t have to be huge. Little things add up, my friend!
