If you are a parent, you probably want to do everything you can to make sure that your student succeeds. Sometimes, figuring out how you can help them can prove difficult. In this post, I am going show you five simple ways parents can help their students succeed.
One of the best things that you can do to help your student is to encourage them to keep working hard in school. Some examples include encouraging them to study, to improve their time management skills, and to be more productive. If your student didn’t do so well on a test this week, let them know that it’s okay and you know they can do better next time. Sometimes even a sweet text or care package could mean the world to your student during a hard week.
Talk to them
Sometimes college life can get really stressful and we need an outside source that we can vent to. Remind your student that they can always talk to you about anything. Whether it’s their annoying roommate, their really difficult class, or even boyfriend drama, your student needs to know that you are there for them. Be willing to listen without sharing advice until your student asks for it. This will help them learn how to solve their own conflicts while also knowing that you are right there if they need your advice!
Motivation is something that many students struggle with. I get emails from students who have difficulties feeling motivated all the time. I strongly believe that parents can help motivate their students to do their best in college. Remind your student that they can accomplish anything as long as they are willing to work for it. Encourage them to start being more productive, manage their time, talk to their professor, and even learn how to work in a group. Motivating your student in these little ways can really have a big impact on your student’s success!
This one is really important. In order for your student to succeed, you have to learn to trust them. I know that this is probably a scary time for you. Your student is now out of the house and on their own. But they have to learn to make their own decisions so that they can learn from them. Let them make their own mistakes. It will prepare them for the future.
In order to succeed in college, your student needs to feel supported. Ask your student how their classes are going. If they are feeling stressed, remind them that you believe in them and that you are proud of their hard work. Let them know that you will always be there for them and that you love them.
I hope this gives parents a few ideas on how you can help your student succeed. Although these five things may seem small, they can really have a big impact on your student’s success!
