Being in a long distance relationship is hard. Everyone knows that. However, there are things that many people don’t know before going into a long distance relationship of their own. In this post, I’m going to share five things that I didn’t know before I got into my own long distance relationship. Hopefully, this post will be able to help those who are considering a new long distance relationship and will encourage those who are already in a long distance relationship.
1. Long distance requires a LOT of trust
If you don’t trust the person that you are doing long distance with, then don’t bother. In order for things to work, you have to be able to trust each other fully. You won’t see each other much, so you have to be willing to trust that when they say they are at the movies with friends they are actually at the movies with friends. I know that trust can be hard sometimes, but, if it is the right person, you will be able to trust each other fully.
When you’re long distance you also have to be able to give each other space for themselves and their friends. It’s not healthy for all of someone’s attention to be on only one person. Both people should have lives outside of the relationship or you will both go nuts, seriously.
2. Long distance takes time
Patience is a virtue, my friend. When you’re long distance, you should expect less time for school, work, and sleep. Healthy relationships require time. You’ll be having a lot of phone calls and Facetimes. However, you need to be able to prioritize and make the most of the time that you do have for both school and your relationship. You can’t spend all of your time on either one. To help with this, both of you can strive to be productive and get work done throughout the day so that you can have time to talk to each other later.
3. Most people won’t understand
When someone finds out that you are long distance, expect them to be shocked and confused. Some people will think it’s a waste of time. Many people just don’t think long distance works. That’s fine as long -as you aren’t one of those people. You will get asked how you do it and the answer should be obvious..your guy is amazing. If it’s the right person it shouldn’t be so tough.
4. Some days are better than others
When you’re long distance, you will learn that some days are harder than others. Sometimes you’re going to miss your person more than normal. Other days, you’re going to think that long distance is a piece of cake. When you two are feeling confused, sad, or aggravated at each other, take time to use each other’s love languages to make things better. Seriously, knowing each other’s love language can make any tough situation that much easier. Remember, always be patient with each other, plan visits, and do countdowns to make things easier until you see each other again.
5. Long distance will only work with the right person
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times. Long distance will only work if you two are right for each other. Seriously, if you’re having doubts about the other person, you may want to reconsider. Talk things out and share what you expect from each other. Think about how long you guys will have to be long distance and whether or not you can both handle it. If you decide to stick it out, don’t lose hope! It is possible, trust me! I’m going on three years and am expecting a minimum of two more years of long distance. That’s just life for Jordan and me at the moment, and we are okay with that.
I hope this post helps give you a better idea of what being in a long distance relationship is really like. For me, I think these things would have been helpful to know before being in a long distance relationship. Thankfully, even though I didn’t know all of these things, my long distance relationship is still going strong, and I can’t see that changing anytime soon! I hope yours goes just as well!
