Did you know that there are a ton of benefits of being single in college? It’s true; I promise! As a girl who is in a relationship (a wonderful one at that), I understand how important those years of singlehood were in my life. Trust me, it will be worth it ladies! In this post, I am going to be sharing five benefits of being single in college to help encourage you throughout this stage in your life!
1. Being Single in College Gives You More Free Time
When you are single, you have so much more free time. With this time, you get to do whatever you want. That can include anything from watching Netflix, going for a run, or spending time with your friends. With all of this extra time, you get to learn more about yourself, explore the area, and make more meaningful friendships.
When you’re in a relationship, in order to make things work, you have to spend time with your partner. College is extremely busy already, so this quickly cuts down on your free time! Single ladies, take advantage the extra time that you have now! You will miss it later!
2. Being Single in College Lets You Be Selfish
Being a single lady in college means you get to do what you want when you want. You don’t have to worry about if your boyfriend’s feelings, you just get to do you. This gives you time to focus on you and on the things you like! Go get your nails done, watch an entire season of The Mindy Project, go out with the girls, etc! Use this time as a single woman to find out what you like and include it into your life regularly!
In a relationship, being selfish is not an option. In order for things to work, you have to have compromise. I don’t mean bending over backwards to do everything your boyfriend wants, though. I just mean that you guys have to work together on many decisions. Single ladies, take advantage of this time in your life when you can do whatever you want!
3. Being Single in College Gives You Endless Possibilities for Your Future
If you’re a single girl, then you know that your future possibilities have no limits! Planning on moving across the country? Cool! Needing to go to graduate school for three years? Awesome! This is so much easier because you don’t have to plan your life around two people. With just you, there is so much less to work out! Being single during this time also means that you get to focus on your future instead of on your partner.
Although being in a relationship doesn’t entirely limit your future possibilities, it does make things more difficult. If you move, both of you have to find a job in your new town. If one of you goes to graduate school, you may have to be long distance for longer. If both of you have to continue schooling, it may be difficult to spend time together.
4. Being Single in College Will Help You Save Money
One of the best things that being single in college will help you do is to save money. Y’all, boys are expensive! Not as expensive as us girls..but still expensive! If you’re single, you don’t have to buy anniversary presents, extra Christmas presents, Valentine’s Day presents, birthday presents, etc.! You don’t have to be sweet and buy them little essentials, and you don’t have to go out all of the time and spend extra money on movie tickets! Instead, you can save this money or spend it on yourself!
When you’re in a relationship, every time you turn around there is a new holiday that requires buying gifts! Plus, if you’re long distance like my boyfriend and I are, you also have to pay for shipping, which is not cheap! Single ladies, you’ll find a great guy soon enough. I would suggest that you start saving that money now!
5. Being Single in College Will Help You Not Be So Glued to Your Phone
Last but not least, being single in college will help you put your phone away more often. Instead of always texting back, being on the phone, or Facetiming, set your phone down and be present with friends, family, etc. Spend time in the now instead of on social media or texting constantly. Give yourself a little more me time each day to help you unwind.
In a relationship, especially a long-distance one like mine, our phones are what connects us. This means that I rarely go anywhere without out (shame on me!). When you are single, you don’t have to worry about that missed call and can spend time doing whatever you want!
I hope these benefits of being single in college help encourage all of you single ladies out there! Make the most of the time that you have as a single woman! You are free to do whatever your beautiful heart desires! Make it worth it! Your guy will come soon enough!
