Helping your incoming college freshman prepare for their first year of college can be a daunting task. There are so many lists of “must haves” for new college students. This makes trying to figure out what your college freshman actually needs a very daunting task! In this post, I am going to be walking you through a few of the biggest things that your college freshman will actually need.
This is the most important thing that you can give your college freshman. I hear it in emails from students all the time. They want to make their parents proud. Knowing that you support them and their dreams means a lot to them. It will help encourage them and remind them that you believe in them even when they feel like giving up.
In the room:
A few of the main things that your student will need include dorm decor and bedding. Things that are simple work best. Reminding your student that you want them to like their decor and bedding all four years of college not just their first year! Your student is going to be needing as much sleep as they can get. This is why it is important to get a good mattress topper and pillow too! Your student will also need storage items. Personally, I use a storage cube, a small rolling cart, and a shoe organizer to help me save space.
These are often things that most people forget. For the few times that your student eats in the room, they will need microwavable dishes, bowls, utensils, and napkins. They probably won’t use them too often so you shouldn’t have to get too much! Your student will also be needing easy dorm foods like microwaveable foods, cereal, chips, ramen, and crackers. A water bottle would also be a great investment! Your student can take this to class each and every day to help them stay hydrated!
When it comes to college classes, your student will need pens, pencils, highlighters, and a good laptop. Your student may also need a notebook, binder, and/or folders. This really depends on your student’s note-taking preference. An accordion folder would also be helpful! I use this to keep old test, quizzes, and handouts organized! By using this, all of my material will be in one place, easily accessible for those cumulative final exams!
Personal items are usually things that many parents and students forget! So that you avoid this, I would suggest that your student make a running list of hygiene products that they use for an entire week. This way they will know what is part of their regular routine and won’t accidentally leave something at home! Other personal things that your student should consider bringing to college include relaxing me time items like a coloring book, movies, music, and more! Netflix and Hulu would also be great for your student!
