As college students, we are all burdened by the ever rising price of tuition. Yes, we know that there are scholarships out there, but how on earth do we find the ones that work for us? I don’t know about you, but I am sick of seeing these huge scholarships that millions of people apply to! What chance do I really have of winning those? I am also tired of seeing those scary, “too simple to be true” scholarships that end up only awarding $100! Yes, mom, I know I should apply for as many scholarships as possible but filling out these applications is time-consuming and frustrating!
I have been blessed to have much of my tuition paid for thanks to my mother’s service in the Navy, but I have also been fortunate enough to win various scholarships to cover what is leftover. I know how frustrating, exhausting, and disappointing this process can be. So, how can you weed through all of these scholarships and find the ones that work for you? Here are a few tips from my personal college experience!
1. Write down things that make you unique
One of the main things that I have learned from applying for scholarships is that we need to focus on those things that are specific to us. What stands out about you? Are you certain race? Did you attend a private high school? What do you want to do with your degree? What is your GPA like? Did you get a good ACT score? Did either of your parents serve in the military? Are you a college freshman? There are so many things that make us stand out. Once you have determined these unique things, write them down!
P.s. I have created a bonus which you can print out and where you can fill in all of this information to help you with your scholarship search! You can grab this bonus by signing up below!
2. Crunch the numbers
Next, you need to determine your current GPA. Knowing this will help you only apply for scholarships that you meet the requirements for. If you are a high school student, it may also be important to know your ACT and SAT scores. Some scholarships will not require this information, but some may need it. It is important to keep copies of this information handy for future scholarship searches.
3. Make a note of scholarships offered only to your college
Does your college have a pamphlet full of scholarships that they offer their students? Make sure you pick that up or search for it on the college website! Put a star by each of the scholarships that you meet the requirements for. Then, determine whether these scholarships are given to all students who meet the requirements or if there are limited spots that are determined by completing a scholarship application. If so, get to work! These “one college only” scholarships are great because they dramatically limit the amount of students who are applying. This will greatly increase your odds of getting selected!
4. Start googling “college scholarships for _______”
Remember that list of unique qualities that I had you write down earlier? Now it is time to put those to use! Head to Google and start searching for “college scholarships for insert a unique quality here”. As an example, I would search “college scholarships for Navy children” or “college scholarships for Hispanics”. Another example would be to use your future profession. Because there are so many career fields that are in high demand, some of these fields offer scholarships to students who are planning on becoming things such as teachers, preachers, or even farmers. No matter what you want to do in life, this is definitely worth a shot!
5. Apply for as many scholarships as you can
By now you should have been able to find at least five scholarships that you qualify for. If not, keep looking! I know that they are out there! Now that you have a list of scholarships, make sure that you write down their names, deadlines, requirements, what they are worth, and when the winners are announced. Once you have completed the application, be sure to put a check mark by it! I have created a space in the free bonus where you can add all of this.
I know how expensive tuition can be and how frustrating looking for scholarships can get, so I really hope that this post helps you on your hunt for college scholarships.
