What is your biggest worry when it’s time for you to head to college? For some of you, your biggest concern is how hard classes will be. For others, it may be leaving your family or boyfriend back home. For many, however, it’s living with a roommate. Today, I’m going to give you guys a few little tips on how to get along with your new roommate. Eventually, I hope you will come to love living with a roommate!
Don’t you judge me! We’ve all been there. You need to see who your roommate is and what they are like before you guys are thrown together. It is completely understandable. However, don’t automatically jump to conclusions about what kind of person they are. Instead, use social media as a way to get to know them. Then get the ball rolling and send them a message! Be brave! You’ve got this!
Messaging your soon to be roommate is a great way to start. Make sure you keep communication going once you guys are living together. This really helps take away unnecessary worries and tension. Once you are moved in, talk to them freely. Ask about their hometown. Figure out what major they are. Just get to know them.
Set boundaries if necessary
Most people are pretty good at knowing when it’s okay to borrow your clothes and when it’s not. However, once you’re moved in, it may be a good idea to let your new roommate know your personal preference on these things. Example: Is it okay for your roommate to grab a snack or two from your drawer? You decide. Just make sure that you tell them in a nice way not a bossy way!
Ask their opinion
Instead of assuming that one wall is yours to decorate, be polite and ask where they were thinking of putting their things. This will help in the communication department. Figure out what they like and what things you guys have in common.
In any healthy relationship, there has to be some type of compromise. Instead of trying to win over your roommate to your opinion of how things should be done, try listening to both opinions and find a way to meet in the middle. This will definitely keep you away from those not-so-pretty girl fights.
Remember these tips as you start out each year. Hopefully, they will help you have a great roommate experience like me!
