Are you sick of always running out of time for your assignments? Do you feel like you are doing homework for forever and not getting anything accomplished? Ready to put an end to this nonsense? It’s about time! Today, I am going to share with you the one thing you need to boost your productivity in college! If you’ve been following along with my posts and social media accounts, you’ve probably noticed that there is one tool that I just can’t shut up about! That one thing is a productivity technique called Pomodoro! In this post, I am going to show you exactly what Pomodoro is, how to use it, and how it helps you be more productive in college!
What the heck is Pomodoro?
Pomodoro is a productivity tool that encourages you to work on one task without distraction for twenty-five minutes. After this, you are allowed to have a five-minute break in which you can do whatever you want. I usually spend my break time texting or on social media. You would be surprised at how quickly five minutes goes by! After this, you then begin working for another twenty-five minutes and rest for five. You complete this cycle one more time (three in total) and are allowed a fifteen-minute break instead of a five-minute break! During my larger break, I usually get moving to wake up and reenergize because we all know that sitting for any amount of time on those school provided wooden desk chairs is not fun!
How do you use Pomodoro?
I have found that the best way for me to use Pomodoro is by using a website that already has the time increments programmed into it. My favorite website for this is called TomatoTimer. What I love about this website is that it is super easy to use, has a section that reminds you of how to implement the technique, and has the twenty-five minute, five minute, and fifteen minute breaks pre-programmed! You can also allow the website to give you notifications when your time is up! All you have to do is get started! If you want your Pomodoro time to be more versatile, I know students who opt for the timer on their phone and set it for however long they think the task should take them! This should work just as well as long as you follow the “no distractions” rule! The best thing that I have discovered to help me stick to this rule is by turning my phone face down and on sleep mode! This way, I won’t receive any notification unless someone is calling me!
How does Pomodoro help boost productivity?
Pomodoro helps improve your productivity by allowing you to be more conscious of how you spend your study time. You know how you like to scroll through Instagram while studying? Yeah, Pomodoro makes you feel guilty for that. Since the purpose of the twenty-five-minute increment is to focus on one task, you feel more obligated to work without distraction. In turn, this helps you get your assignments, studying, and papers done much more quickly!
Bonus tip: You should try pairing your Pomodoro time with headphones and the classical relaxation station on Pandora! Having music without words to tune out the rest of the world helps you to avoid distractions in your studying area that you can’t turn off like your phone notifications!
I hope that this post encourages you to try out the Pomodoro technique for yourself! Once you start, you will be surprised how much work you can get done in only twenty-five minutes!
