When you head off to college, you quickly find that staying in touch with friends and family back home is much more difficult than you imagined. This can cause stress on relationships and a strong feeling of homesickness and even loneliness. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be the case for you! In this post, I’m going to share a few simple ways college students can stay in touch with friends and family back home!
Schedule a weekly phone call
One of the best things that you can do for your relationships in college is to schedule a weekly phone call day or time. First, I want you to pick a day that both you and your loved one are least busy. Then, you can decide whether you want to choose a specific time or play it by ear each week and call during your chosen day whenever each person is free. The downside to picking a specific time is that it may not always be available. The downside to not picking a specific time is you may be more likely to skip your call more often! Remember, just choose what works best for you and your loved one! These simple things can help you make time for the relationships that matter while also allowing you to be productive and to schedule your work around your weekly catch-up call!
Write each other letters
This is a much more fun, personal way to stay in touch with friends and family compared to texting or using social media. Writing snail mail is cute, unique, and way more personalize-able! This can be used regularly or saved for special occasions like birthdays, graduations, and more! Sending letters can also give you an opportunity to work on your handwriting, calligraphy, and even drawing skills! Instead of rushing your writing like you do when you take notes, you can try keeping things nice and neat!
Plan a monthly meet up
Another simple way college students can stay in touch with friends and family is by planning a regular meet up. This can be weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly. Find what works for you and your loved one and stick to it. Whether you choose to just hang out and catch up or to do something fun together, I know it will mean so much to both of you that you got to see each other! You can also try a group meet up with your favorite people! If distance is an issue, you could also Skype or FaceTime each other. This may not be as fun, but it is definitely better than nothing!
I hope that this post was able to give you a few simple ways that college students can stay in touch with friends and family. Remember, a big part of showing someone you care is making time for them. Whether this is with a phone call, regular texting, special snail mail, or visits, I know your efforts will mean a lot to your friends and family!
