If you can’t tell, I’ve kind of been on planner kick with my recent posts (a.k.a. How to Find Your Perfect Planner). I have always been and probably always will be a hardcore planner thanks to my mom. In the past, however, I never really used my planners as well as I should have. With my most recent planner purchase, I am determined to stick to it! So, to keep us both motivated to stick to our #plannergoals, I am going to share with you how you can use your planner productively in college! Because we all know how important it is to have all the things in one place!
1. Find the Right Planner for You
One of the most important steps in making sure that you will actually use your planner is to buy the right planner for you. If you are a really busy person, maybe you should consider a larger planner. If you want to be able to carry something more compact with you everywhere you go, then you should opt for a smaller pocket sized planner. Do you have a lot of things going on in your life? Maybe having a planner that has a ton of space on each day would be best for you! Really, it all depends on you, your life, and what you like. I have a full post on how to find your perfect planner that you can check out here!
2. Color Code
Once you have the right planner, you are going to want to color code your activities. Not only will this make your planner prettier, but it will also help you quickly determine what types of things you will need to do each day. Personally, I use no more than five colors to organize my planner. I use pink for blogging tasks, blue for school work, purple for personal activities (appointments, fun things, etc.), pencil for things that are subject to change, and black to mark items out once they are completed! I have found that this is the system that works best for me; however, I know many students who like to have a specific color for every class that they are in. Don’t be afraid to play around with your color coding/organization system until you find what is right for you!
3. Washi Tape
One new thing that I am adding into my planner this year is washi tape. Guys, they have too many gorgeous colors to resist! I actually went a little overboard and bought five to seven different colors and sizes of washi tape from Hobby Lobby the other day. (They were on sale! What was I supposed to do?!). I use these to fun tapes to mark out long trips, important events, or even just to liven up my planner. Because having a pretty planner makes me want to keep using it!
4. Make It Functional
In order to use your planner for a more productive life, you are going to need it to be functional. All three of the steps above tie into this. By choosing your perfect planner, you should be able to start on the right foot. If you have created a color-coding system that works for your life, then things should already be becoming much more organized and effective. If you use washi tape to block out specific days, times, and events, you are already adding in great visual organization tools! In order to increase your planner’s functionality, make sure that you are adding in small, easy to handle tasks. Also be sure that you aren’t giving yourself too many things to do in a day. Overwhelm is a real thing!
5. Make It Fun
To use your planner productively in college, you are going to have to make it fun! Otherwise, it may become one of those planners from your past that just sits in your backpack and barely gets used. You can make your planner fun by including stickers, drawings, hand lettering, inspirational quotes, extra washi tape, and much more! I make my planner fun by using multiple colors, washi tape, and by creating little designs on various planner pages!
I hope that this post encourages you to start using your planner more productively in college!
